My original plan was to run the @SantaMonica RAIN2 off of my return pump. With such a small sump foot print it was finally decided to run the scrubber off it's own pump. I've had this ATS for a few months now and it is time to get it into the tank! I did need to pickup a few PVC parts to complete this job, while I was at it I bought the Hanna Alk tester.

Last weekend I noticed a small drip coming down from my reefer return standpipe. After talking to @Broadfield I drained the overflow, pulled the standpipe and made sure the o-ring was still intact. After verifying that there was no damage to the 0-ring I re-installed and turned the pump back on. The leak was minimized to a much slower drip, on Sunday I entered a ticket with Red Sea. On Monday Amanda with Red Sea emailed me, I provided pictures of the parts and the leak and she sent out a new return stand pipe. I haven't installed the new pipe yet, the leak has since gone away for now. I wanted to be pro-active and get the ticket entered and a new pipe in just in case.

For the ATS I super glued two 1/4" pieces of acrylic together as the base. I then super glued a 2" PVC table top fitting onto the acrylic. After that I used 2" PVC to a 2" PVC tee with a 1/2" threaded output. I am using a MJ1200 to run the ATS with a valve to control flow. None of the PVC fittings are glued together for easy removal.

The ATS hasn't been started yet, I will test nitrates and phosphates before I turn the scrubber on. Both of those levels are always low for me, I don't want to strip the system completely so I will monitor.

@phelphrey-- do you notice on your return pipe there is alot of movement or shake as the water returns to the sump? On my RSR250 my pipe seems to dance around alot and it has sparked some concern with me. Im considering securing the return pipe to try and reduce the opportunity for a leak....

Cscultho, I had the same problem on my Reefer 450 when my Vortechs went to pulse or nutrient export mode the return pipe swayed back and forth not just beneath the stand but in the weir box. The solution I figured out! I removed the BIG FAT pvc pipe that sits on top of the main drain line inside the weir. This is the BIG round one with the clear top. Now all my vibration problems are gone. The problem that I saw was over time the swaying motion would put stress on the plastic bulk heads near the bottom of your weir box and eventually cause a leak. This is my one complaint about Red Sea tanks. They should have gone with traditional bulkheads. I've been running her this way for 2 years no problems

Good to know. I will remove my clear return pipe and see if this reduces or eliminates the pulsing....Thanks CODE3EMT!

I have no vibration from any of my equipment, at least none that I can hear or feel.

April 30th 2017 RAIN2 Algae Turf Scrubber Startup. Running 1 GEM5 light 24/7. Tested water with Hannas Phosphorus tester, test came back at 4, phosphates really low. I did test nitrate with my Red Sea kit (which was expired) but it was zero. I threw it away, all future tests will be phosphate tests only. I'll pickup another nitrate test kit eventually.

Added a piece of 1" PVC with a 90 to push the flow away from the output of the scrubber

This is probably a better forum to ask my questions :-)

Hello all,
My name is Dan. After several years of break from the hobby, I'm building a new reef.

This is the place where I want to put the aquarium:

This is eventually what I want to achieve:

As you can see, access to the aquarium is only from the front and I have no almost no space a sides.

I bought a new Reefer 425XL White with 2 Hydra 26HD LED fixtures (a.k.a Reefer 425XL Delux).

Now I want to buy the rest of the required equipment and I would like to get your feedback about the following:

1. Skimmer - Tunze 9410 (or maybe 9415?)
2. Return pump - Jebao DCP-8000 ECO with Controller (will be used also for chiller and other reactors)
3. Wave makers - 2 X Sicce XStream 8000

What do you think? any other (not very very expensive) ideas?

In addition, I would like to understand the following:
1. What is the best way to split the return pump also to a chiller and other needs. I saw some amazing sumps here, I will be happy to get some instructions for how to create hard return pipes.

2. Considering the chiller will be behind the wall, to where it should return water to? the skimmer chamber? the return pump chamber?

3. After reading some posts here, I'm afraid I did a mistake with the light. Is it a good choice for a mixed reef? Red Sea's suggestion is to have 2 Hydra's. Is it really enough?

I will probably have more questions later :-)

Many thanks!
Dan.

Just a couple thoughts Dan. Is that an area you're planning on putting furniture to view the tank? Also, bare in mind you'll only be able to clean the front glass with a magnet scrubber. You'll have to do the back and sides with a scrubber on a stick. You will need to leave room to run cords for your lights and powerhead into the cabinet. I assume you'll open the top cabinet to feed them. You may still need a screen top for any jumpers.

Hi, Thanks for your help!

Yes, right next to it, we have the dinning table and our living room.
With regards to cleaning the glass, as you said, I will probably have a scraper on a stick.
I have an inch space behind the aquarium for cords. Do you think it will be enough?

Thanks!

An inch is doable but is likely going to be difficult. How are you going to attach any powerheads? Most good powerheads use a magnetic coupling on the outside glass.

Quick overdue update. My family and I went to Florida for a week and while we were gone I setup a laptop with teamviewer installed so I can log into my laptop from my phone and view the tank. Was nice to be able to see the tank and run the Neptune AFS at the same time and make sure the fish were fed. Aside from that the RAIN2 has been in the tank for awhile now and it is growing algae. It took it a few weeks to start the process, I haven't opened the hood and looked for a week or so now. Was running the RAIN2 off of a MJ1200, redid my manifold and now have it running off of my VarioS-6 pump along with the Marine Depot XS AquaMaxx reactor.

Santa Monica RAIN2 has been installed and running for a few weeks now -

Temporary pump setup for the RAIN2

New manifold in place
Reactor - https://www.marinedepot.com/AquaMaxx...FRISPR-vi.html

Nyos 120 ran in my system for 6 months, time to pull it and clean it in vinegar

Back in the sump

24 hours later

Glued some plastic on the front corners for a flush mount. No support needed for the back, it rests on the overflow

Hi
I ordered the 425xl and I now have second thoughts about the skimmer. I was planning to buy tunze 9410.

I leave in Israel but going to order the skimmer from Europe. Although I can order any skimmer, I prefer to have one that I can easily find spare parts in Israel.
My options are:
Deltec 1456 (currently my favorite), 1351
Tunze 9410, 9415
Bubble Magus
Bubble king (too expensive)

I'm looking for an effective and silent skimmer.

What do you think?

Thanks!
Dan.

Could someone with a Reefer 450 measure for me how far left the opening on the right side of the cabinet goes from the right end of the cabinet? I'm kicking around buying one and would like to know if my wall outlet falls within that opening where I'm thinking of placing it.

Hi everyone - does anyone know where to buy the sponge that goes between the sump chambers?

Is there any alternative that would stop more debris from going to the return chamber - and that is easier to clean? I spend hours trying to take off the debris from the sponge.

Thanks in advance!

I've never seen it sold separately. I clean mine about once a month by just rinsing it.

When I first installed the AquaMaxx reactor I had plans to run GFO/Carbon. Since I got the ATS online I don't want to run any GFO and my carbon usage has gone down. I decided to pull the pond matrix out of the media bag and place it in the reactor. I do also have pond matrix in the drain section of the sump -

Decided to build a light mount out of 8020. As a comparison this is a picture of the Kessils on the A Series Mounts -

The long span is 48", I went with 48" to reduce the shipping costs. There is a 11" piece mounted to the long span with that Tee'd off into a 18" span for light mounting. This is all series 10. I used the Kessil 90's to mount the lights to the 8020 -

I painted a board white on the top, this section can be seen on the opening of the Red Sea Reefer stand. Drilled some holes and bolted the 8020 bracket to the board. Took a hacksaw to cut the bolts down.

Not the best side by side but it gives you an idea -

Final result -

Had a small piece of rubble rock laying in my cabinet, was to lazy to take it into the garage and put it in my bucket of rock so I dropped it into the tank. Crazy to see how white the rock once was compared to the background and the current color of my rock work.

What do you think of the RFG? I put one on my nano and although it does exactly what it says it supposed to, it reduced the flow from my return significantly. The water level in the tank dropped a bit and I had to adjust the drain valve. I have since removed it but may try it again with a more powerful return pump to compensate for the losses.
